Tintern Abbey is located between New Ross and Hook Lighthouse in County Wexford, founded on the Hook Peninsula by William Marshal around 1200 this abbey is an evocative piece of Irish monastic history.
The Abbey was founded for the Cistercian order and the monks lived and worked here for centuries. After the dissolution of the religious houses, the Abbey came into the possession of the Colclough family. The Colclough’s occupied the abbey from the sixteenth century until the mid-twentieth. Today, visitors to the lovely County Wexford site can view the remains of the nave, chancel, tower, chapel and cloister. Guided tours around the property are available and last for approximately 45-minutes. The abbey is set in a special area of conservation and is surrounded by woodland within which are beautiful walking trails.
Located in the grounds of Tintern abbey is Colclough gardens, there is a small entrance fee to these beautiful walled gardens, they will bring you back to your childhood memories of the secret garden.
