Vinegar Hill
From The Riverside Park Hotel
Located just 5 minutes from the Riverside Park Hotel, visit the most famous site of the 1798 Rebellion against colonial British Rule, Vinegar Hill. The Battle of Vinegar Hill, as it became known, in County Wexford in the southeast of Ireland, was the last major engagement between the United Irishmen and the British military and marked a significant turning point in the rebellion. Over 10,000 crown forces launched an attack on Vinegar Hill, which was then occupied by over 20,000 rebels and camp followers. This was the largest rebel camp and headquarters of the Wexford United Irishmen and their supporters.
Vinegar Hill sits at the top of Enniscorthy offering panoramic views of the town and the River Slaney. Its current peace, serenity and spectacular views belie its background as one of the bloodiest battlefields in Irish history. You can visit this historic site for free and stay as long as you’d like to admire the view from this point. Afterwards, visit the 1789 Centre and meet the key figures of the Rebellion and participate in the state of the art 4D battle of Vinegar Hill Experience.
